End-of-Life Care: Core Competencies for Physicians

End-of-Life Care: Core Competencies for Physicians
On August 17, 2011, the Iowa Board of Medicine amended the Iowa Administrative Code 653 Chapter 11, requiring physicians to complete continuing medical education on end-of-life care management. This administrative rule was changed in an effort to improve end-of-life care for patients.

Based on this information, it has been concluded that physicians are in need of training regarding caring for patients at the end of their lives.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify a patient at the "end-of-life."
  • Discuss the "palliative" model of care.
  • Illustrate critical conversations with patients and families.
  • Explain the importance of coordination among the healthcare team.
  • Identify care options and develop a plan of care based on the "goals of care."
  • Address assessment of decision making capacity.
  • Determine ethical issues surrounding palliative sedation and medical futility.
  • Explain the specific needs of Alzheimer's patients and patients suffering from dementia at the end-of-life.
  • Provide scenarios to illustrate practical examples of care planning for patients at the end-of-life.
