Iowa Board of Pharmacy provides new information on Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy (BOP) has released new information relating to Iowa’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PMP). The press release provides details on the type of information contained within the database and the confidentiality of the records. Currently, the database contains controlled substance dispensing information from Iowa pharmacies beginning January 1, 2009 and maintains records for four years following the date of dispensing. Healthcare practitioners who are authorized to prescribe or dispense controlled substances may obtain PMP information regarding their patients for the purpose of providing health care.

The BOP reminds prescribers that current law does not require healthcare practitioners to access PMP information. The PMP is a healthcare tool and can be used to assist in determining appropriate treatment options and to improve the quality of patient care. Recently, the BOP updated the database to allow agents of prescribers to receive their own unique user ID and password, in order to access patient information on behalf of the prescriber. The BOP continues to strive toward updating the system for simplicity and ease of access purposes.

The BOP press release also outlines in detail the process for new registration including the registration of agents under the prescriber. Specific instructions regarding how to access patient information, alerts and requests for information are also found within the press release.
