Committee on Law and Ethics
The IMS' Committee on Law and Ethics addresses medical practice issues with significant legal and/or ethical implications for Iowa physicians; serves as a liaison on behalf of the Iowa Medical Society to the Iowa State Bar Association; and addresses issues referred to it by the IMS House of Delegates or the IMS Board of Directors.
This Committee also serves as a liaison to the Iowa Board of Medicine' (IBM) Iowa Health Physicians Committee (IHPC) relating to impaired physicians.
The Committee has addressed several issues, including nonheartbeating organ donation; physician liabilities in providing pain management; embryonic stem cell research and funding; surrogate consent to experimental treatment; out-of-hospital do-not-resuscitate orders; relationships between local physicians and the Veterans Administration; the ethics of billing relationships for anatomic pathology services; and mediation services for physicians in disputes.
The Committee currently is chaired by Jeff Anderson, MD, Des Moines.
