Effective communication is the cornerstone of a good physician-patient relationship. More and more, patients expect physicians and clinics to be responsive to their needs and preferences, to provide them with understandable medical information and to treat them as partners in decisions regarding their care. Maintaining good relationships with patients requires everyone in the clinic to take responsibility for ensuring all patient encounters are handled professionally, efficiently and with respect for the patient. When the relationship is damaged beyond repair, the physician and clinic should consider terminating the relationship. Determining when and how to terminate the relationship can be challenging.

  • Recognize how patient-focused communication skills foster a good patient relationship.
  • Discuss how effective patient complaint handling can repair a damaged patient relationship.
  • Describe the circumstances or reasons when terminating a patient relationship may be appropriate.
  • Lists steps to effectively terminate a patient relationship.
