The Iowa Legislature continues to debate the Iowa "Smokefree Air Act" and its future remains uncertain. The House voted for exemptions for "age-restricted" facilities such as bars and casinos. The Senate voted for no exemptions. IMS supports the bill with no exemptions since IMS members have developed strong anti-tobacco policies. We need you to contact your elected officials and tell them you support this legislation.
The House originally passed HF 2212 with some public smoking exceptions. The Senate passed a version of the bill with no exemptions. Upon the bill’s return to the House, the bill’s exceptions for age-restricted facilities (e.g., bars and casinos) were reinstated. Expectedly, the Senate rejected this again.
The two chambers are now convening a conference committee to work out a mutually agreeable version of the bill. If no agreement can be made, the legislation will no longer be viable. IMS supports legislation with no exemptions. Contact your elected officials to show your support for this crucial legislation. IMS has developed a message for you to send.
